Do I need ChatGPT and Claude?

The short answer: One paid assistant may suffice if it handles your everyday writing and document work on the plan you keep. Keep both when they pass different required tasks or provide capacity you regularly need. Output quality, account-specific limits and required app access still need a real trial.

Suggested jobs: Drafting, Rewriting, Web research, File analysis. You can change them and add your own costs. Entered costs and notes stay out of URLs.

Research with sourcesFree has limited deep research; Plus expands it. [2]Web search is listed across plans; Research is listed for Pro and Max. [4]Open each source. Two agreeing answers are not independent proof.
Documents and spreadsheetsUploads and analysis are included in Plus; file type and upload quotas still apply. [1][3]Chat attachments, project knowledge and file creation have different documented limits. [6][7]Test your longest real document and one usable exported file.

Plan and file limits that can change the decision

ChatGPT

Plus is USD 20 billed monthly; API use is billed separately. Message limits can vary with demand and account access. [1]

The current plan page lists GPT-6 reasoning on Plus. Check your account’s model picker rather than assuming every advertised model is included. [2]

Document uploads: 512 MB maximum and 2 million tokens per file; spreadsheets are approximately 50 MB, images 20 MB. The published upload rate is up to 80 files per three hours, reduced at peak times; Free allows three uploads daily. Plus projects allow 25 files. [3]

Claude

Pro is USD 20 monthly or USD 200 paid upfront yearly. Its plan table lists Opus, Sonnet and Haiku; Fable requires usage credits on Pro. [4]

Paid usage has five-hour sessions and weekly caps; model, effort and document length affect consumption. [5]

The upload guide lists 500 MB per chat file, 20 files per chat and 30 MB per project file. PDFs over 100 pages are text-only there. [6]

The separate file-creation guide still lists 30 MB uploads/downloads. These documents describe different workflows and do not establish a universal large-file entitlement; test the exact route you use. [7]

Published web prices are reference amounts, not your invoice. Taxes, local currency, app-store billing and extra usage can differ. An annual monthly equivalent is not a monthly cancellation option.

Switching risks and what remains uncertain

Save original files, useful prompts, project instructions and important outputs before changing plans. Check that your remaining account can open and export the work; an export does not automatically recreate another vendor’s project or app permissions.

We have not tested your account, your output quality, regional availability or app connection. A free second account may be enough for occasional second opinions. Keep a second paid plan only when the trial establishes recurring value or needed capacity.

A three-task trial before the next renewal

Use the plan you would keep. Record corrections, time spent and any blocked step. This is an editorial trial, not a measured winner.

  1. Draft the same client email from a real brief in both tools. Count factual corrections, tone edits and minutes until you can send it.
  2. Rewrite one proposal without changing names, numbers or commitments. Then use the same document to answer three questions with page references; verify every answer against the file.
  3. Research one current question using primary sources, then open the cited pages. Repeat at your normal workload and test the required app connection and file export on the plan you would keep.

One tool may suffice if it passes every required task at normal volume. Keep both if each passes a different essential task; verify more if either required job remains untested.

Suggested jobs: Drafting, Rewriting, Web research, File analysis. You can change them and add your own costs. Entered costs and notes stay out of URLs.
